Techno-Economic Climate Risk in Nepal: Study for Risk-Rated River Basin Finance

On the morning of August 26, 2026 at 8:37 AM NST, a glacial collapse above the Bhotekoshi River in the Lhende catchment straddling the Nepal-Tibet border sent a debris torrent downstream. Within minutes, communications towers were destroyed and emergency responders were issuing door to door warnings. By 9:00 AM NST, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had been formally notified by which point the flood had already overwhelmed infrastructure built and reinforced specifically to resist such events.
